The Application layer that includes the data gathering and data processing functionality which allows for the delivery of those data, in a desired form, to the end-user by using applications to visualize and manage it.

An extension to this generic architecture can expand some of the existing modules to create new ones that emphasize on the management, processing and networking features that can be found in an IoT ecosystem. To this end, the expanded IoT architecture might include five layers: Sensing, Transport, Network, Processing, and Application layer as this can be seen in Fig. 2. The two new layers can possess the following characteristics:
